- Course objectives
- English for the Deaf is the recognized alternative to any compulsory course of English run by the Masaryk University offered to Deaf and hearing-impaired students. The course is composed of three modules. The first module reviews elementary and lower intermediate grammar of English and vocabulary of closed word-classes. Students graduating from the second module are expected, first, to be able to use a learner's English-English dictionary, that is are expected to understand most words in its definition word list, and second, to have read several shorter stories in English. Students enrolled in the third module further develop their English by reading an undergraduate textbook of their choice. Overall, graduates of the course are expected to be able to read academic prose in English.
- Syllabus
- As far as grammar is concerned, English for the Deaf I covers: basic word order (1), present tenses (2), expressing future (3), past tenses (4), perfect tenses (5), revision of word order (8), modal verbs (6), passive voice (7), conjunctions in English (16), adverbs in English, use of prepositions (20), articles (11) and determiners (12). (Numbers in parentheses provide references to the corresponding chapters in The Good Grammar Book.) --- As far as vocabulary is concerned, this module covers basic vocabulary of closed word-classes, including a determiners, conjunctions, prepositions, pronouns, adverbs and irregular verbs.

- Assessment methods (in Czech)
- V rámci předmětu může každý student získat až 100 bodů: 12 bodů za aktivní účast v hodinách; 36 bodů za (včasné a pečlivé) vypracování domácích úloh; 32 (8+8+16) bodů v testech (v 5. a 9. týdnu semestru a v 1. týdnu zkouškového období); 10 bodů za domácí četbu (kontrolováno v 7. týdnu); 10 bodů za krátké slohové práce vycházející z domácí četby (k odevzdání v 7. a 11. týdnu). Pro úspěšné absolvování kurzu je třeba získat bodů alespoň 75.
