Course objectives
The course consists of two parts. The first one addresses the Health Care system. It provides an introduction to Health Care Economy. The aim is to understand the main specifics of Health Care (HC) in order to be able to cope with a complex situation in this field currently occurring in the country. At the end of the first part of the course, students should be able to clarify objectives, be aware of special features of management and finance of HC. They should be able to analyse and understand the basis and tendencies of current systematic changes in HC. The course is intended to be a "springboard" for students’ practical envolvement, mainly within public administration bodies or in social services.
The second part focuses on the contemporary conception of social service system, its limitation of efficiency, quality and fiscal possibilities of the system – funding from the European Social Fund. The main objective is to clarify the sense of social services in the society, limitation of principles, possibilities of social help, clarification of management, institutional structure and ways of funding.

  • 1st block: Introduction to the HC Economy, Health markets, special features of the demand and supply of helath care. Health Systems, their evaluation and financing. Reimbursement methods.
  • 2nd block: Health Care in the Czech Republic: Institutions, Finance, Management, Reforms
  • 3rd block: Economy of social services: identification within the system, character, subject, typology, funding possibilities, types of social services, demand for social services versus supply of social services
  • 4th block: Economy of social services: factors of efficiency in social services, standards of social services, certification in social services, trends in social services in Europe, European Social Fund

Assessment methods
There are two requirements for that need to be fulfilled to be eligible to take the final part of the examination:
(1) Two assignments;
(2) Required minimum score from 2 midterms. The midterms create 40% of the final score.
Midterm requirements: Students have to obtain at least 10 points from both two tests (which means 20 in total/50%). The exam is combined.
