- Course objectives
- The main goal of the course Technology of Computer Networks is to provide students with information about technology and services that are used in modern computer networks. The students obtain information about particular network architectures, principles of local network administration, TCP/IP protocol, routing of information and about the Internet (including its services).
- Syllabus
- Computer networks. Basic concepts, different sorts.
- Network topologies and their properties.
- Transfer media (thin and thick coax-cable, twisted-pair, fibre optic).
- Media access methods (deterministic and stochastic).
- Network architectures (Token-Ring, Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, 10G Ethernet, FDDI, ATM, ...) and principles of their operation.
- Wireless communication technologies.
- Digital signal hierarchy. ISDN. SONET/SDH.
- Virtual networks (VLAN).
- The OSI Model.
- Novell NetWare computer networks. Directory services NDS (X.500, LDAP).
- The TCP/IP protocol. IP address. Types of TCP/IP networks. Routing in TCP/IP networks. IPv6 protocol.
- The Internet. Review and classification of the Internet services.
