- Course objectives
- For the Doctoral Studies English Foreign Language Exam, students can either:__________________________________________ 1) write a test organized by the Language Education Centre for the School of Social Studies, MU Brno (FSS CJV), or 2) have the exam recognized on the basis of an exam that was done before, or on the basis of appropriate documentation (such as a publication in the foreign language; (see below). The English exam (IS registration code: D_AJ_2) is regularly conducted three times a year: during exam periods in January, June and September. It is a written exam. Students must register at least 3 working days before the exam date. Exam registration involves 1) signing up in IS and 2) a list of 5 topics (for an essay that would be about 4 standard pages long) that should be sent to FSS CJV. Each topic must include a brief synopsis of about 5 lines, or 5 sentences, or 5 points. The topics must connect to the theme of the student’s dissertation and must be signed by the student’s advisor in order to be accepted. At the actual sitting of the exam, the examiner will select one of the proposed topics.____________________________________ RECOGNITION OF EXAM if one of the following is provided: 1) International language certificates at the level of ERR C1 (e.g., CAE, Pitman ESOL Higher Intermediate, TOEIC score 701 - 910, BEC Higher, TOEFL iBT score 92 - 112, IELTS score 6.5 - 7) or higher 2) General State Language Exam 3) Master’s degree in English language 4) degree obtained from a foreign university where the study language was English 5) publications: book (the student’s name must be written as the main author or first co-author); lecture (the student’s name must be written as the main author or first co-author); article (the student’s name must be written as the main author or first co-author); presentation at a conference held in English (the student’s name must be written as the main author and presenter; the student must also submit a published abstract of the presentation and a written version of the presentation itself); rejected unpublished article (the student’s name must be written as the main author; the student must also submit the text and the rejection explanation). GENERAL WRITTEN EXAM PARAMETERS: 1. length is about 4 standard pages (i.e. 7200 characters); 2. formal style corresponding to academic writing (title, introduction, main body, conclusion); 3. use of academic conventions when citing sources STYLE AND ORGANIZATION: 1. clear argumentation expressed in paragraphs; 2. paragraphs are logically and coherently sequenced; 3. use of text construction principles; 4. formal register LANGUAGE SKILLS: 1. use of a wide grammatical range suitable for academic writing (appropriate tenses, modal verbs); 2. precise grammatical structures; 3. ability to form compound and complex sentences (not only simple sentences) VOCABULARY: 1. relevant vocabulary and technical terminology; 2. precise use of expressions, idioms, and phrases suitable for academic writing; 3. conjunctions and joining phrases appropriate to formal writing; SOURCES: the student may bring to the exam some written out citations, a list of literature used (which can be checked by the examiner), and technical and general dictionaries.
