- Course objectives
- CONTEMPARY CZECH LANGUAGE (selected chapters for journalists) The course is designed as a practical workshop. Aim: to motivate students to adopt a professional interest in the Czech language and to underpin the knowledge they acquired in their previous studies. Also: to deepen and supplement their knowledge through intensive training. Each session entails editing especially created texts (each concerning a specific point of grammar) followed by joint analysis of the given subject. Partial tests (games) verify – afterwards at the particular time and through repetition – students’ knowledge throughout the entire term. After a certain area has been learned, the teacher evaluates the tests and students thus obtain feedback. Students work with basic codifying reference works during the course. They must know the rules of Czech orthography in order to be able to take part. The conditions for successful completion of the course are a student’s active participation (long-term absence is not allowed), successful completion of the partial and summary tests, passing of the final test + successful completion of the seminar assignments. All the written materials make up the study documents (students must use them to prepare for the final test).

Communication analysis – intermediate tests: linguistic politeness and impoliteness in Czech (Part One). 8th lesson Language culture. Communication analysis – intermediate tests: linguistic politeness and impoliteness in Czech (Part Two). 9th lesson Sentence and message (basic features). Word order. Functional sentence perspective. Subjective word order. Specially created text. Analysis. Intermediate tests (steps towards basic stylistic confidence). 10th lesson Other parts of sentence (expressed through word kinds and subordinate clauses). Connecting expressions. Abbreviations, symbols, titles. Punctuation rules – continued. Intermediate test. 11th lesson Connection of clauses. Sentence and text connection. Basic types of compound sentence connection, connecting expressions, punctuation rules. Text condensation – present transgressive: correct forms and use. 12th lesson Features of basic types of complex sentence, punctuation rules.
