- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able to:
- identify basic information on non-governemental organisations, their importance and position;
- describe their position in the Czech society and legal system;
- analyse prerequisites of their successful functionining. - Syllabus
- 1)Expectations from the course and each other. Structured presentation: I and non-profit organizations. The benefits and obligations arising from the course.
- 2)Non-profit organizations in the community. Advantages and disadvantages of solutions to social, health, environmental and social needs through other companies, benefit cooperation or non-profit organizations. Different models in different countries.
- 3)New legislation defining the legal status of NGOs in the country. The amendment to the Civil Code and the Law on Associations of Citizens, Law on Foundations Law on Public Benefit Corporations.
- 4)Benefits for NGOs and others. Company or non-profit organization? Public benefit status in Europe. Tax benefits for NGOs in the Czech Republic and tax incentives for donors in selected EU Member States.
- 5)Associations Association in the Civil Code. The establishment of an association. The practical operation of selected communities. The transformation of a civic association to communities.
- 6)Foundation Endowment funds. Why, when and how to establish a foundation or endowment fund. Foundation vs. Public Service Company - the current and future legislation. The functioning of the Nadace Partnerství - Funding and financial management of the Foundation.
- 7)Foundations in practice Practical functioning of a Foundation. Example Nadace Partnerství. Examples of other large foundations in the country. Examples from abroad. Role of the Board, grant commissions role in assessing projects.
- 8)Community service The provision of community service through charitable society, social enterprise, or otherwise?
- 9)How to build a dood business plan and not go bankrupt. Business plan of the company x non-profit organistion.
- 10)Management Management of nonprofit organizations. Financial, human resources, project. Hierarchical vs. project structure. The distribution of powers and responsibilities.
- 11)Marketing and fundraising Fundraising vs. / and marketing. Practice Nadace Partnerství and Partnership o.p.s. Examples of strategies of other NGOs in the Czech Republic and abroad. Individual fundraising: fundraising events, direct mail, public collection. Major Donors campaign. Corporate fundraising. Code of Ethics: social responsibility.
- 12)Communication with the public, donors, sponsors, investors and clients PR NGO and its specifics. PR and marketing. Brand and products. Media communication. Social Media. Use of CRM

- A combination of lectures, class discussions and presentation of student`s projects (in groups).
- Assessment methods
- To pass students are expected to be active in seminars, to present and defend a project and to write two essays. The final examination is in writing. The exact conditions of the point evaluation for the test and essays are published in the section “Study materials”.
