The course is meant to be a follow up course within the field of European studies. It further develops previous courses - European integration, European Political Systems and Institutions of the EU. It works with information and knowledge acquired in courses mentioned above.

Course objectives
The objective of this course is to analyze the enlargement process of the EU and compare single enlargement rounds in the context of deepening European integration. Students will understand stages of enlargement as well as the mechanism of withdrawal from the EU. The intention is to explain their logic, instruments, a way to conduct negotiations, to define specifics of accessing countries and relations between candidates and EU institutions. Last but not least, the aim of the course is to identify the recent strategy of the EU in this regard.
Learning outcomes
Explain the development of the process of EU enlargement and identify relevant changes in terms of quality.
Compare single stages of the former EU enlargement.
Describe procedures and instruments to accede to, and withdraw from the European Union.
Discuss problems linked to the horizontal integration of the EU.
Evaluate a current strategy of EU's enlargement process.

  • 3. The Southern enlargement: Greece / Spain and Portugal
  • 4. The Northern enlargement: Austria, Finland, Sweden, (Norway).
  • 5. Theoretical aspects of EU enlargement. Strategy of the Eastern enlargement.
  • 6. The Eastern Enlargement I: the Luxembourg group.
  • 7. The Eastern Enlargement I: the Helsinki group.
  • 8. Video presentation: accession negotiations of the Eastern enlargement.
  • 9. The Eastern Enlargement II: Bulgaria, Romania.
  • 10. Revaluation of the enlargement policy, conditionality, the Croatian enlargement.

Teaching methods
Regular readings, working-out of essay writing, tests.
Assessment methods
The course terminates with an exam. Exam is composed of three parts under evaluation in points – final written exam, essay, and in-term written exam. Student may acquire up to 100 points. Essay within 16 000 signs minimum is to be submitted in electronical form through the university information system. To pass the course successfully it is necessary to obtain at least 65 point altogether = 65% of points granted within the course.
