Course objectives
The course is thematically focused on the application of sociological concepts in various housing contexts. The course will enable students to evaluate in particular: (a) the parameters of the housing situation in the Czech Republic against the background of a broader framework of European countries; (b) ways of perception the living environment with regard to the social differences of the actors; (c) housing preferences of the population; (d) specifics of housing in Czech and European housing estates; (e) the social and spatial consequences of living in suburbs; (f) the effects of residential segregation and gentrification on housing; (g) the conceptualization of the term ghetto and its current context in Western countries.

  • (2) Housing situation: the Czech Republic and EU countries;
  • (3) Perception of living environment and housing preferences;
  • (4) Housing estates: Birth, specifics, prospects;
  • (5) Suburbanization and housing;
  • (6) Spatial segregation and gentrification
  • (7) Housing and specific socio-spatial formations: ghetto.
