- Course objectives
- The course focuses on the European energy policy, i.e. how the EU organises the production, transport, and use of energy. For the following reasons, it is one of the most important common policies. Firstly, energy is closely related to climate change. Fossil fuels are the primary cause of the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and the EU's efforts to address this issue are directly linked to the dramatic reconfiguration of the European energy mix. Secondly, energy availability and prices are crucial for the competitiveness of European industry and the well-being of the population. Thirdly, the need to import most energy from third countries leads to a close link between energy and external relations, diplomacy, and security policy. This is seen in the impact of Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, whose implications are discussed in the last lectures of the course. The course looks at all three of these areas and their diplomatic, environmental, security, economic, technical, and social implications.
