Course objectives
The goal of the course is to learn how to use quantitative data as a source for a journalistic story. In blocks, students will get a taste of data acquisition, analysis and visualization. The comprehensiveness of the course is based on the requirements of the application sphere as elaborated in the labor market analysis.
Learning outcomes
Students will learn the basics of data journalism, basic principles of data analysis and data visualization by working on their own data article. (1) They will learn how to acquire publicly available data; (2) They will try working with tools for analyzing different types of data; (3) They will try out procedures and tools for data visualization.
Syllabus
  • Structure Block 1: Course organization, syllabus and requirements. Simple data analysis. Block 2: Data sources. Choosing a topic for the final data paper. Block 3: Data visualization. Block 4: Presentation of the final data paper.

Assessment methods
To get credit, students must submit a final data paper - a text based on the analysis of real data. Participation in at least three of the four sessions is a prerequisite for credit.
