Course objectives
The course is the basis for the practical training of future television journalists, publicists and authors of television works. At the end of this course the student will be able to: independently process a television journalistic unit or a television journalistic work from a visual point of view. They will be able to work with DSLR, record reportage materials on various media and then process them in video editing software. Student will know the theoretical principles of editing and will be able to use them in practice. He/she will be familiar with basic concepts such as video codecs and coding schemes and will be able to work with them.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- recognize professional editing programs for video editing;
- know the basic concepts of digital video;
- recognizes well and badly shot image material;
- will be able to work with DSLR and sound recording devices;
- will be able to acquire a quality image and will be able to subsequently edit and export it to various formats.
Syllabus
  • 1. Basics of editing read message - approx. 25-30 seconds Shoot 10 shots - an image sequence - so that the images can be cut on top of each other. Shot triad. 2. Shoot synchronous Interview with the respondent - covered visually (partially). Location of the microphone, position of the editor and respondent, space in the statement (editing over white / coverage of images), when covering the interview, editing the sound (questions / answers must be at the same volume level). 3. Shooting STUP ČSS - read message with synchronous and stand-up interconnection of synchronous and stup (audio and video, canteen rotation), movement in the image (editor's movement / camera movement). 4. Mojo Shoot the image sequence on 6 shots with your mobile phone. Differences in camera / cell phone shots, settings, formats, interlaced / progressive shooting. 5. Basic elements of reportage - the so-called skeleton and their interconnection. The structure of the report, how to arrange the individual elements, the use of noises to link the story; Violation of the principles of editing - analysis of samples and search for erroneous elements, how to avoid the loop of the report (few shots, poorly written text). 6. No comments Shoot "no comment" = studio, visually interesting topic, nice shots with noises - until 1:30. Theoretical lesson (video formats, codecs or coding schemes, bitrate, aspect ratio, etc.), the possibility of consultation in the production of a report. 7. Live input Introduction to directing, live broadcasting, switching cameras and sources during live broadcasting (Petr Uhlíř). 8. Editing effects Familiarization with the most commonly used editing effects in news (changing the format, adjusting the interlacing of fields, blurring the face / license plate, dividing the screen, etc.). 9. Subtitles Working with subtitles, sourceing, etc. 10. Working with the camera Field work - choosing lighting conditions when filming an interview - how to cope in difficult situations (external lighting, blend), field exercises. 11. Working with different types of microphones Field work - how to choose the right microphone, how to work with a cue, where to record a conversation (to make it sound acceptable - analysis of previous synchronos), field exercises. 12. Solutions in video editing programs Stabilization, what to do when you lose material - re-link media, etc. 13. Evaluation of previous work, analysis of problematic actions.

Teaching methods
Contact teaching, work with a camera and an editing program, consultations, discussions, analysis of examples, practical work with audiovisual material.
Assessment methods
The student receives credit for participation in classes (maximum two absences allowed) and fulfillment of continuous tasks.
