- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to introduce the political and party system of France with focus on the second half of the 20th century. At the end of this course, the students should understand and analyze the party system, the electoral system and the specificities of the French political life.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course students should be able to understand and explain contemporary French politic and party system. The students should be also able to describe and analyse the selected topics associated with elections in multilevel perspective in France.
- Syllabus
- 1. Introduction to the topic, bsics of the party system and semi-presidential system, effects of the electoral systems on the party system. 2. Specifics of the political system, cohabitation, comunal and regional electoral systems etc. 3. Evolution of the left-right spectrum and phases of evolution of the party system. 4. Gaullist from 1945 on. 5. Home study. 6. Traditional right and christian parties of the political centre - parties and coalitions. 7. Far right - focus on UDCA, ARLP and FN. 8. The Socialist Party. 9. The Communist Party. 10. The extreme left parties and movements - focus on last two decates. 11. Green parties. !@. Nationalist parties and new trends of the last decade (RPF, MPF, CPNT etc.).

- Assessment methods
- To pass the course, the student has to gain minimum of 31 points out of 100. 60 points can be gained in the written exam, 20 for the written asignment and 20 for active participation in the seminars together with a presentation of a report on a topic connected with the sub.ject of the course or an additional written essay. Grading: A: 100 – 93 B: 92 - 85 C: 84 – 77 D: 76 - 69 E: 68 - 61, F: 60 and less.
