- Cíle předmětu
- The course will provide students with comprehensive understanding of the diverse research meth-ods used in the Social Sciences, and the necessary practical skills required for their application. The students will learn the basic methods of qualitative and quantitative research. Consideration given to formulation of problems, techniques or gathering data, presentation and interpretation of research will be some of the discussed issues. By learning this, students will be able to carry out social research by themselves and to find answers to relevant social science questions.
- Osnova
- The course will be given in the form of workshops. Lectures will focus on both qualitative and quantitative research methods, especially in regard to research design, validity, data collection, and dissemination of research results. Students are expected to complete the weekly readings prior to class, attend classes, participate in discussions, prepare and present papers/reviews. Written assignments and final exam will facilitate your understanding of the course material and evaluate your understanding of it.

- Výukové metody
- The course will be given in the form of workshops, where both teacher and students give oral presentations. Students are expected to complete the weekly readings prior to class. Questioning, explaining, collaborating, and demonstrating will be used as teaching methods and strategies.
- Metody hodnocení
- Students are expected to complete the weekly readings prior to class, attend classes, participate in discussions, prepare and present papers/reviews. The course will end with a written exam from the obligatory literature. Each student have to prepare at least twice a semester 4-5 page overview (about 1500 words) from the obligatory reading of a particular week and present this overview at the seminar (workshop). There will be two written assignments: The first assignment provides experience in evaluating the methods and data analysis techniques of studies published in different journals. Deadline: The paper is due on the 13th of April 2010. Length: 2000 words Value of this activity: 20 points The second written assignment – Research proposal - Please suggest a new research project which would build on what was learned during the whole semester. Deadline: The paper is due on the 4th of May 2010. Length: 3000 words Value of this activity: 20 points 420 pages - weekly reading
