Course objectives
Graduates of the course will be able to: explain social, family implications of demographic trends; explain implications of population aging; list relevant sociological theories on aging and inclusion of seniors; analyze process of negotiation between elderly people and their social surroundings;
Syllabus
  • 1. Intersection of sociology of family and gerontosociology concerning age and aging 2. Aging and family transformation and demographic changes in late modernity 3. Sociological theories of age and aging 4. Theories of kinship and support within family 5. Social inclusion of seniors – senior’s informal social networks and relatives 6. Family relations, interchange of support and help 7. Basis of coping strategies – family. Transition stages and crisis. 8. Family support models. Negotiation of help and support. Family care or institutional care – coping dilemma. 9. Sandwich generation. Seniors as care providers. 10. Domestic violence. 11. Inclusion of “singles” and childless seniors. 12. Kinship support conflicts: Personal autonomy vs. Social ties. 13. Age and family in 21st century
