- Course objectives
- Gender equality is one of the basic challenges for today’s democratic societies, at least from the 1960s on, when the question of equal opportunities became one of the central topics of second wave feminism as well as of general democratization efforts. Today, concerns of gender equality form one of the basic pillars of all developed democratic states as well as the European Union. With regards to this, a range of methods for the promotion and implementation of gender equality and its principles has been developing – among them for example gender mainstreaming, gender budgeting, gender statistics as well as various forms of affirmative action. The aim of the course is to introduce to the students the most important methods and their practical application in the context of the existing institutional background of gender equality politics in the Czech Republic and its linkages to international organizations. The main focus is put on critical thinking, reflection and self-contained interpretation of the given problematic. The course is organized in the form of interactive lectures and seminar discussions. After successfully completing the course, students will have a basic knowledge of the theoretical groundings of gender equality politics and their institutional background on the level of the Czech Republic, the United Nations and the European Union. Furthermore, students will be able to understand the basic principles, advantages and risks of the most important methods for the promotion and implementation of gender equality.
