- Course objectives
- The course provides students with a significant opportunity to connect the previous theoretical courses and practically oriented seminars organised by the Department with the actual practice in real conditions. In the course of a three-month internship in media (editorial boards of newspapers, Internet news portals, radio and television, the aim is thus to familiarise students with everyday work in the selected profession. The students will become aware of everyday functioning of the specific editorial board, studio so that they could test their own skills and competences for performing the profession. Another aim is to allow the students to become “independent”, being able not only to fulfil the assigned task but also to come up with their own ideas. In case, the course output will be author's news reporting and journalist materials published in the media where the students perform their internships. In the course of the internship, the students will acquire detailed knowledge of the daily work routine in the specific organisation, learning to work “inside” the institution and in the field (provided that it is included in the institution's work). On the theoretical level, the students will gain, according to the institution's character, appropriate knowledge of not only the organisation itself, but also the functioning of companies, public administration, local authorities, and other public bodies and organisations at least on the district level. At the end of the internship, the student will be able to manage, without any serious difficulties, the complete work on the level of the given function within the specific institution. The course participants will gain and deepen not only practical skills and routine procedures, but their knowledge will also grow to another qualitative level with the help of reflection and confronting the theory and practice, which will significantly extend and enhance the possibilities of finding a vacancy after graduation and will substantially increase their competitiveness in comparison with those students who have not completed a similar cycle, linking the theory and practice (over an extended period of three months of everyday work in media.
The aim of the seminar is to provide the reflection of the twelve-week professional internship, exchange of experience among students working in various institutions, chaired discussion about the experience and knowledge, as well as evaluating the knowledge in relation to the the corresponding professional literature, theory and content of the courses offered by the Department. In the seminar, students will thus learn to compare their own and other students' practical knowledge with what they have learned in different courses and draw appropriate conclusions based o such comparison. With the help of reflecting one's own experience and confronting the theory and practice, students' knowledge will rise to another qualitative level, which will substantially extend and support their possibility to find a vacancy after graduation and will significantly increase their competitiveness in comparison with those students who have not completed a similar cycle, linking the theory and practice. - Syllabus
- 1. Under the guarantor's management (employee of the organisation where the student will perform the internship), the student will familiarise in detail with everyday editorial, agency or company routine, with the institution's work, as well as with the activities performed within the function in which the student will be trained. 2. Managing not only routine content and organisational affairs, but also technical knowledge and processes in the given organisation. 3. Gradual fulfilment of not only assigned tasks but also (following an agreement with the internship guarantor) realisation of one's own ideas. 4. Gradual managing of independent work not only within the organisation but also in the field (e.g. participating in press conferences, etc.). 5. Final evaluation of student's work by the guarantor and possible guarantor's recommendations for improving student's work in the future. Note: The internship may be performed only in the institution which will oblige to provide the student with the necessary conditions, i.e. a workplace, computer, etc., and will cover the expenses when the student is asked to work outside the office. In case of an institution with which the Department or the Faculty has not concluded a general agreement on internship performance, the student is required to arrange everything individually following a preliminary agreement with the lecturer. In such case, the institution must oblige to provide the internship in the required extent and quality, to allow the lecturer's “inspection”, and after completing the internship, to submit to the lecture written evaluation of the internship in the requested scope.
- Introductory seminar – course organisation and content, setting the main rules and principles to be fulfilled and respected in the course of the internship (a method handbook is used); sharing the experience of those students who completed the internship in previous periods (presentation), and screening a didactic and presentation video recorded in media during previous internships. Mid-course seminar – reflection of students' experience gained so far and confronting it with the theory which was the content of the previously completed courses, as well as the practical courses organised by the Department (presentation of students' essays, presentation of the results of their work, and chaired discussion with the exchange of experience among students working in various institutions). - Teaching methods
- Professional internship and three seminars with chaired discussion and sharing students' experience (oral presentations with samples of the work done within the course Professional internship, and written essays about the experience submitted in the middle and at the end of the course).
- Assessment methods
- Practical daily work in the selected news editorial boards (newspapers, radio or TV channels, or the Internet) with the daily operation, daily news outputs, and an editorial team. The internship may be completed both in the Czech Republic and abroad. The internship lasts for 12 weeks (usually 8 hours per working day) in the periods determined by or agreed by the lecturer – there are three possible terms: spring, summer (students perform the internship during summer holidays, although formally they register the course in the autumn semester), and autumn. The internship also includes individual consultations. The course may be successfully completed only by those students who submit a sufficient amount of published materials (both quality and quantity are assessed) and submit the guarantor's evaluation (e.g. editor-in-chief or head of department), in which the student's work will be considered at least as satisfactory. Another prerequisite for a successful completion of the course is participating in the seminar (introductory seminar, mid-course seminar, and final seminar). The internship may be recognised (in part or wholly) to those students who work or worked (not more than 5 years ago) for media in the extent corresponding to the above mentioned internship conditions.
Three seminars with chaired discussion and sharing students' experience (oral presentations with samples of the work done within the course Professional internship, and written essays about the experience submitted in the middle and at the end of the course).
