Course objectives
At the end of the course students ahould be able to analyze selected strategically important aspects of the ancient wars.
Syllabus
  • 1. Strategy in the ancient Greece and its determinants 2. Greek-Persian wars 3. Peloponesian war as a model conflict (seminar) 4. Rise of Macedonia and expedition of Alexander (seminar) 5. Followers of Alexander 6. Strategy in the ancient Rome and its determinants 7. Second Punic war as model conflict (seminar) 8. Expansion in the Mediterranean 9. Crisis of the republic in the 1st century B.C., civic war (seminar) 10. Late republic and imperial Rome, expansion in the Europe 11. Defence of the Empire 11. Rome at the end of the anciet era 12. Possibilities of the simulation of the ancient wars Class resources are available to students through Masaryk University’s online Information System (IS). Teaching methods
The course consists of lectures and class discussions.
Assessment methods
Seminar paper (maximum 10 points), two essays (4 points each), presence on the seminar (1 point each - maximum 4 for all seminars) and active participation (3 points each - maximum 12 points for all seminars). Students need at least 18 points of maximum 30 points.
