Course objectives
The course is based on the discussion about the up-to-date issues of the European Union. At the end of the course, students should be able to understand the modern development of European integration process as well as the contemporary processes of the EU. Students are expected to actively participate in the discussion and to follow the EU related news.
Learning outcomes
Interpret events currently going on in the European Union.
Present arguments on a given topic.

  • 1. Opening session - 3.3. 2. Evaluation of Angela Merkel´ governance 10.3. 3. EP elections and the "Spitzenkandidaten" - 17.3. 4. Brexit - 24.3. 5. Covid and its impact on the EU - 31.3. 6. Protecting EU common values within the member states - 14.4. 7. Orbán governance and the question of "illiberal democracy"- 28.4. 8. EU enlargement and the Western Balkan - 12.5.

Teaching methods
Discussion, readings of the study materials, homeworks.
Assessment methods
The course is finished with a credit. To acquire a credit an obligatory attendance and an active participation in the course are necessary. Students are also asked to write seven homeworks on a theme related to the chosen issue of contemporary processes in the EU.
Points assessment:
Each homework 5 points. Max. 35 points. The treshold for passing the course are 21 points.
