Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the development of Czech journalism from its beginnings at the turn of the 15-16th century until the middle of the 19th century. The course concentrates on the issue of newspaper leaflet production of the 16-17th centuries, censorship at the time of the Pre-Bleak and the Bohemian Mountains, the beginnings of the periodic press in the 18th century. the national renaissance production of newspapers and magazines and the emergence of modern political journalism in the period 1848-1849 connected with the personality of K. Havlíček Borovský. Due to the fact that the history of journalism is in close connection with the political, economic, social and cultural history, individual themes are presented in the context of contemporary development in the Czech lands; emphasis is placed on important cultural and social phenomena such as the reformation or the national emancipation process in connection with the birth of modern nationalism.
