Course objectives
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. Identify the nature of arbitration
2. Identify the nature of international commercial arbitration
3. Understand the advantages and disadvantages of choosing international commercial arbitration as a means of dispute resolution
4. Understand the nature of ad hoc and institutional arbitration
5. Identify and understand important international arbitral conventions and rules
6. Apply your knowledge to problem and essay questions.

Literature
  • Students will be provided with: 1. Detailed lecture hand-outs, 2. Seminar materials, 3. Copies of relevant journal articles
Teaching methods
Students will receive lectures, read and engage with required and further reading, and make presentations. Students will be required to undertake wider reading from a number of sources apart from textbooks. This will include reading international conventions and rules (such as the New York Convention, the UN Model Law, the ICC Rules on International Commercial Arbitration etc) as well as journal articles. Students will be required to consider essay and problem questions and to apply abstract concepts to them in a legal context and to discuss these during seminars.
Assessment methods
The summative assessment is a 2000 word essay. The essay title will be set by the lecturer.
