- Course objectives
- At the conclusion of the course students should be able to:
explain and understand the basics of the criminal justice system;
work with information on how crimes are charged;
create their own arguments from both the defense and prosecution perspective;
make reasoned decisions on how juries reach their conclusions;
make comparisons with the Czech criminal justice system;
make deductions and recommendations on the strengths and weaknesses of each system;
and interpret ways the systems in each nation can be improved. - Syllabus
- SESSION 1: General overview of civil and criminal legal systems in the United States.
- SESSION 2: The criminal investigation including the role of police and prosecutors.
- SESSION 3: Overview of Constitutional Law.
- SESSION 4: Video Presentation.
- SESSION 5: Rules of Evidence and pre-trial procedures.
- SESSION 6: The criminal jury trial.
- SESSION 7: Sentencing and correctional procedure and objectives.
- SESSION 8: Overview and Summary of Course and essay examination.
