- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able to describe and explain terms related to common laboratory work, name laboratory equipment and define its functions, describe individual steps of laboratory procedures, apply professional language in communication with doctors and colleagues, interpret laboratory reports; use grammatical structures typical of medical language.
- Syllabus
- 1st week: UNIT 1: Spectrophotometer 1. Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises. Grammar: Word order; frequency expressions.
- 2nd week: UNIT 1: Spectrophotometer 1. Practising definitions of basic technical terms. Grammar: Articles and their use.
- 3rd week: UNIT 2: Spectrophotometer 2. Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises. Grammar: "There is/are" constructions.
- 4th week: UNIT 2: Spectrophotometer 2. Practising definitions of basic technical terms. Grammar: Present tense simple and progressive.
- 5th week: UNIT 3: Routine chemistry analysers. Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises. Grammar: Formation of questions; indirect questions.
- 6th week: UNIT 3: Routine chemistry analysers. Practising definitions of basic technical terms. Grammar: Past tense simple and progressive.
- 7th week: UNIT 4: Electrophoresis. Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises. Grammar: Meaning of individual types of questions; commands.
- 8th week: UNIT 4: Electrophoresis. Practising definitions of basic technical terms. Grammar: Present perfect tense simple and progressive.
- 9th week: UNIT 5: Osmometry. Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises. Grammar: Modal verbs.
- 10th week: UNIT 5: Osmometry. Practising definitions of basic technical terms. Grammar: Expressing the future. Future tense.
- 11th week: UNIT 6: Chromatography. Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises. Grammar: Plural I; derivation of feminine forms.
- 12th week: UNIT 6: Chromatography. Practising definitions of basic technical terms. Grammar: Plural II.
- 13th week: UNIT 7: Atomic absorption spectrometry. Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises. Practising definitions of basic technical terms. Grammar: Much/many, few/little.
- 14th week: UNIT 8: Acid base and blood gas analyser. Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises. Practising definitions of basic technical terms. Grammar: Comparison of adjectives and adverbs. Expressing "už ne/ještě ne" in English.

- Assessment methods
- Attendance is compulsory. Two absences are tolerated provided a letter of excuse is handed in at the Department of Studies. It is highly recommended to make up for the absence in the same week. Assessment is based on the results of the credit test (score - minimum 65%) and attendance. Students get two credits for successful completion of the course.
