Course objectives
Learning outcomes of the course unit The aim of the course is to acquire knowledge of clinical nutrition needed to provide specialized nutritional care in adults with cancer.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to use information about basic principles of nutrition and carcinogenesis interaction in patient education and cancer prevention. The student will know the anticancer treatment, its types according to the treatment method, the principles of nutritional care, undesirable effects of anticancer treatment and their influence, nutritional measures during or after the treatment of cancer diseases, the most common dietary adjustments in anticancer treatment.
Syllabus
  • Cancer and its treatment, basic terms. Remission, relapse, progression. Curative, symptomatic, palliative treatment. Prognosis of cancer. Statistics of cancer treatment results. Examination methods in oncology. Biopsy, ultrasound, CT, MRI, PET, tumor markers. Laboratory examinations, normal and pathological values ​​of basic examinations. Laboratory examination of nutritional parameters. Surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Targeted biological treatment. Side effects of cancer treatment. Nausea and vomiting. Diarrhea. Gastrointestinal mucositis. Reduction of hematopoiesis. Infectious complications. Nutritional problems in cancer treatment. Examination of nutritional status of cancer patient Psychological problems in cancer. Anorexia and cachexia syndrome Principles of nutritional support in tumor anorexia and cachexia Pharmacological treatment of tumor cachexia. Oral nutritional intervention in cancer. Dietary recommendations in cancer. Sipping. Special preparations for sipping. Nutritional support in perioperative period, in chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
