Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The students acquire fundamental information on language and linguistics almost from structural linguistics view. They recognise the aspects of national language and of its stratification. Fundamental information are supplement by the information on the position of national languages and on position of Czech among other national languages in European Union, on the Common European Reference Framework, on the relevancy of language and communicative competence in the education.
- Students acquire knowledge of the linguistic subjects: of fundamental disciplines and of special disciplines and of linguistic handbooks and linguistic journals.
- Students acquire information on the Czech and worldwide linguists, too, and on the history of the Czech and worldwide linguistics. The information of this subject are important for the further training in Czech language (for the training in special linguistic journals, too.
It is pressupossed that student after ending the course:
- is able to explain relations between language and speech/speaking, can explaint the constructs: sign, meaning, sence (of language utterance), language situacion, national language, communication...;
- is able to define linguistic terms that are used in linguistic disciplines;
- knows famous Czech and world-wide linguists.

  • 1. Language. Signs. Concept, language meaning, sense. Language and speech. 2. Communication. Communicative situation and its elements. Communicative function. Speech and Speaking as a special action. 3. Natural languages, artificial languages. Dialects. Language situation and its types. Bilingual peoples. Di-glossy. 4. Origin, source and development of the language. Classification of the language. 5. Functions of the language. Language and meaning. Language and the society. 6. National language and its stratification. Language policy. Cultivation of the language and of the speaking. 7. The structure of the language. Language levels and language elements (phoneme, morpheme, sentence, clause, text). Grammatical categories. Grammatical concepts. 8. Linguistics and linguistic disciplines. Linguistics and other sciences (semantics, pragmatics). 9. Fundaments of linguistics development. Czech and worldwide linguists 10. Linguistic journals. 11. Czech national corpus.

Ending: oral colloquium
The themen of colloquium are included in syllabus or see adress http://moodlinka.ped.muni.cz/course/view.php?id=1350
The colloquium is realised in the groups of 3-5 students; the students decide by lot two questions. The answers are evaluated according to the correctness and to the speech cultivation, too.
