- B1 level knowledge of English is required. The pre-intermediate student (B1) understands the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters. Can enter unprepared into conversation about familiar topics and connect ideas in a simple way. Can provide information, take messages, give simple instructions and deal with less routine problems, e.g. complaints. Can describe events, experiences, hopes and ambitions; give reasons, explanations of plans and opinions.

- Course objectives
- Students will develop all receptive (reading, listening) and productive (speaking, writing) language skills together with their grammar and vocabulary awarness within B2 level, by means of acadmeic topics/issues related to the sphere of special needs education. Course objectives: 1) acquiring specialist vocabulary and terminology related to SNE; 2) B2 level grammar practice; 3) enhancing all language skills; 4) practising academic writing; 5) giving an oral presentation on a particular SNE issue.

- 1) Course introduction; Mock test; Get-to-know activities; 2) Introduction to SNE terminology. 3) Visual impairment. 4) Hearing Impairment. 5) Integration of visually and hearing impaired pupils in mainstream primary schools. 6) Academic writing: letter of application + project statement. 7) Speech disorders and speech therapy. 8) Physical impairment. 9) Mental disability: Down syndrome. 10) Academic skills: language of presentation and discussion. Grammar: Present simple X continuous; Past simple X continuous; Future in English; Introduction to word formation; Present perfect tenses; Sentence transformations I; The passive; Sentence transformations II; Modals.

- Teaching methods
- Weekly ninety-minute seminars designed for teaching English for specific and academic purposes (acitvities developing students' awarness of language skills and systems within B2 level - listening and reading tasks; grammar and vocabulary practice, discussions and other speaking activities etc.).
- Assessment methods
- Course requirements: 1) Attendance (only two classes can be missed); 2) Active participation in classes; 3) Mid-term test (20 marks); 4) Completed in-term assignments (15 marks); 5) Oral presentation (15 marks); 6)Credit test (50 marks); Assessment: 10 marks - in term-assignments; 10 marks - oral presentation; 20 marks – Mid-term test; 60 marks – Credit test; Total: 100 marks; PASS MARK = 70 marks (70%).
