Cíle předmětu
This course is designed to help students improve their skills in thinking about distance education courses for teaching languages, especially English. By the end of the course, students should be able to: show an understing of the history of distance education and how that influences current courses; define what distance education is and how all of its various parts interact; and demonstrate an understanding of appropriate theories on how to create an effective course.

  • This course will cover distance education from numerous perspectives, starting with history and moving forward. Výukové metody
The course take place entirely online. It will be primarily based around readings and discussions. It will also include work with various web tools such as wikis.
Metody hodnocení
Each week there will be readings assigned around a topic and a discussion forum based on the readings. Students are expected to enter the discussion forums at least three times a week - once early in the week to post initial thoughts about the topic and later to respond to others' ideas. 2 points are given for a thoughtful initial post that shows an understanding of the readings and further development of the ideas contained within. The initial post on each discussion must be made by Saturday evening. 2 further points can be gained for multiple responses that show an engagement with the ideas that come from the other students. In addition there will be three assignments for this class. One is a collaborative assignment where you will work in teams to create a wiki page that summarizes and analyses the readings for that week. The second is a moderating assignment, where you will work in pairs to moderate the discussion of one of the topics. And the last is where you will present a summary and analysis of the major points of the class through one of a number of online tools. Points will be given in the following areas: Points for Activities Activity Points Total 100 Forum Participation (4 points each) 48 Collaborative Assignment 15 Moderation of a Forum 15 Online Presentation 22 70 points are necessary for passing this class.
