Course objectives
The targets:
1. Explain the fundamental attitude to the compound and complex sentence in the contemporary Czech linguistics. (F. Trávníček, F. Kopečný, K. Svoboda, M. Grepl, P. Karlík, J. Hrbáček and others)
2. Establishment of the presupposition of the practical application of the theoretical knowledge when creating algorithms for identification of the types of clauses and of the relationships between coordinated clauses.
3. Establishment of the ability to apply theoretical knowledge when identifying and classifying various types of the compound and complex sentences.
Learning outcomes
It is presupposed student after finishing the course:
(a) students know the terminology of syntax concerning complex and compound sentence;
(b) students can use knowledge of terminology in analysis of compound and complex sentence practically;
(c) students are able to differentiate various types of clauses and to identify relationship between coordinated clauses;
(d) students are able to describe various types of clauses and to give reasons for their opinions;
(e) students know some syntactic theories concerning compound and complex sentence and text.
Syllabus
  • 1. Criteria for the differentiation between a sentence and a compound or complex sentence.
  • 2. Sentences connected in the compound sentence. Connectives (word category, syntactical function, meaning). The Complex sentence.
  • 3. Types of the compound sentence. The juxtaposition. The co-ordination. Complex sentence. Subordination.
  • 4. The sentence and the clause in the complex sentence. 5. The Co-ordination. Types of the semantic function of the co-ordination, the connective of the co-ordination.
  • 6. The subordination.
  • 7. Relations between proposition of the clause and the sentence in complex sentence. The clause in the valence position of the predicative verb in the sentence.
  • 8. A classification of the clauses in the complex sentence, criteria of the classification. Relationships of the contents of the subordinated clause and of the head-clause.
  • 9. The subordinated clause in the position of the sentential element of head-clause. Predicative, subjective, adjective, attributive and complementive subordinated clauses.
  • 10. Adverb clauses.
  • 11. The compound sentence and complex sentence in the Czech grammars and syntactical studies.
  • 12. The sentence in the text. The sentence as communicative units. The segmentation of the text. Units of the texts, relations among them.

- Theoretical lecture with graphical presentation.
- Examples of language phenomena illustrating theoretical theme.
- Discussion, individual study.
Assessment methods
Credit requirements: knowledge of the theme of syllabus; it will be proved by written work (essay)- reflexion of one subject of the lecture (3 pages of text). The work should be handed a week before the end of the examination period.
