- Course objectives
- Students will be able to transcribe basic words and phrases, to read from transcription and pronounce sounds in a native-like way. Students are also trained to transcribe heard and seen text (i.e., transcription from a written text as well as dictation), and to enhance their ability to transfer our classroom materials to the primary school environment. Learning how "to practise self-study" is a crucial part of this course. Throughout the semester students are encouraged to link theory in the classroom to practice at schools via practical tasks.
- Learning outcomes
- The student • understands fundamental linguistic terms in the field of phonetics and phonology and is able to explain these using particular examples; • knows the differences between Czech and English phonemes; • is able to pronounce all English phonemes correctly, is able to explain how they are produced and estimate their typical occurrence in words on the grounds of their spelling; • knows phonemic transcription, is able to use it correctly when transcribing simple English sentences (i.e., transcription from a written text as well as dictation) and is also able to read (pronounce) the transcribed words/sentences correctly; • is able to put theoretical knowledge into practice.

- The following areas will be covered: - phonemic chart
- - the most frequent sound in English: the schwa /ə/
- - English open /æ/ in contrast with the English close /e/ and with the Czech "e"
- - English vowels such as /ɪ/ x /i:/, /ʊ/ x /u:/, /ɒ/ x /ɔ:/ and /ʌ/ x /ɑ:/
- - English diphthongs in words like "go" /əʊ/, "here" /ɪə/, "there" /eə/ and pure /ʊə/ and changes in their contemporary use
- - pronunciation of endings (past tense, plural and the third person singular), voiced x voiceless consonants at the end of words
- - English voiceless and voiced "th", i.e., /θ/ and /ð/
- - English velar /ŋ/ (ng)
- - /v/ versus /w/
- - /r/ in British versus American English; silent /r/ in British English
- - aspiration
- - poems and how to prepare reading these

- The course is based on individual handouts available in the moodle course for each lesson. These handouts are obligatory for both class and home work, and are accompanied by their audio recordings.

- Requirements:
- - online quizzes in the moodle course
- - midterm one-to-one consultation (the end of November)
- - teamwork: teaching practice task: how to teach phonemes to pupils at elementary school
- - final credit test (transcription from a written text and dictation) and one-to-one consultation in the exam period (January+February); pass mark: 70%
- - home work on a regular basis: listenings, transcription, reading out loud (nursery rhymes/poems, simple English texts) and youtube/online tutorials - all these are available in our moodle course
