Course objectives
The aim of the course is a development of the correct Russian pronunciation. Students will make transcription of Russian words, special attention will be paid to the Russian accent (stress) and reduction of the ustressed Russian vowels. Students will learn about the specifics of Russian: hard and soft consonants (15 pairs), pronunciation of vowels in stressed and unstressed syllables, Russian unpaired hard consonants [ж], [ш], [ц] and unpaired soft consonants [чʼ], [j], [шʼ:].

Learning outcomes
Students know the rules of transcription of Russian words and sentences, can correctly pronounce Russian paired hard and soft consonants, reduce vowels in unstressed syllables, can correctly pronounce Russian unpaired hard and soft consonants.
Syllabus
  • 1. Russian alphabet and system of the Russian sounds: vowels and consonants. Orthographical letters, letters that represent vowels and consonants.
  • 2. Transcription, Standards of the transcription.
  • 3. Stress in Russian. Rhythm.
  • 4. Reduction. Pronunciation of the unstressed vowels.
  • 5. Transcription е, ё, ю, я at the beginning of words, after a vowel, after ь.
  • 6. Voiced assimilation. Transcription and pronunciation of the voiced and unvoiced consonants.
  • 7. Paired hard and soft consonants, their transcription and pronunciation.
  • 8. Transcription and pronunciation of the combination of vowel + letters е, ё, и, ю, я.
  • 9. Transcription and pronunciation of the unpaired hard consonants [ж], [ш], [ц].
  • 10. Transcription and pronunciation of the unpaired soft consonants [чʼ], [j], [шʼ:].
  • 11. Reading of long words, phrases and short sentences.
  • 12. Melody of the Russian language in practice.

Written test, that is included two parts:
1. Transcription of Russian words phrases.
2. Transcription of Russian sentences. 70% is required to pass the test.
