- Course objectives
- A B2 course whose mission is to develop students' language in receptive (reading, listening), productive (speaking, writing), and interactive modes of communication. Its further aim is to foster autonomy in students by providing them with opportunities to regulate their own learning process (own vocabulary collection and choice of topics). It also offers tasks that will enable students to develop their academic skills, for example researching sources and synthesizing information, and real-life skills (writing their job application) . Last but not least, the course materials provide a wide range of activities that are aimed at helping students to acquire and practise specialist vocabulary.
- Learning outcomes
- By the end of the course, students will be able to understand spoken texts dealing with SNE topics at B2 level of the CEFR as well as understand written texts dealing with SNE topics at B2 level of the CEFR. Furthermore, they will have familiarised themselves with the language of job advertisements in their specialism and will have written a CV and a covering letter. They will have also tried their hand at writing an academic blog post based on two sources of their choice and demonstrated/presented a SNE technique. They will have collected at least 50 expressions of academic and/or specialist vocabulary of their own choice and reflected on their work during the semester and their progress.
- Syllabus
- Subject-specific topics: issues related to vision loss, hearing loss, speech and language disorders, physical disability and educating students with individual differences. Skills to be practised: writing a CV & covering letter; synthesising information; mediating information and giving feedback. Grammar (self-study): tenses; passive; modals; verb patterns; word formation, B2 sentence structures.
