- Course objectives
- At the end of this course, students should be able to confidently present a pre-prepared topic as well as manage an improvised small talk. The course also aims to prepare students to improvise during various kinds of rhetoric exercises preparing them for the unpredictable situations in their future careers as teachers. One of the outcomes will be the recording of the individual presentations for self-reference and future practice where students can apply the information and experience gathered in the course and it should also allow them to experience situations where they will be exposed to greater stress and attention than is usually common in individual seminars which they attend as students. This practice directly prepares them for their future career and focuses not only on the presentations and their preparation but also on the accompanying skills of lowering stress levels, and controlling one's body language and contact with the audience. It teaches the students to be effective and captivating speakers, that can create a strong bond with their audience, which is a very important practice in a classroom.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon passing this course students will be able to confidently present a pre-prepared topic on the academic as well as non-academic subject. Students will be able to give impromptu speeches without extended preparation time. Students will also be able to select appropriate visual materials for the presentation, and they will gain awareness of the time frame given for a formal presentation. During the course, the students will evaluate their peers which will give them the ability to objectively evaluate any given presentation; students will also be taped and the video recordings of their performances will be used for further analysis of both presentation skills and their use of English. As future teachers, students will learn how to manage their stress levels, how to improve their pace and intonation to be understood by their listeners, and they will also acquire the knowledge necessary for the creation of effective contact with the audience - respectable and captivating, which is key to leading successful classroom.
