- Course objectives
- In Marcus Zusak’s novel Book Thief, Liesel provides comfort to people in the Dresden bomb shelter by reading a story. This course invites you to be an ambassador of comfort, too, through reading in a hospital, foster homes, schools in disadvantaged areas, homes for the elderly and in low-income families. The course takes place in part in the f2f weekly form (4 meetins) and in part as field work. It includes choosing of the right reading material, reading strategies, field work and reflection on the experience. The reading can be done in Czech, English or other languages. The course is open to all MU students. Please note the subject has a schedule according to the set timetable (2-3 meetings at the beginning, 1 at the end). Please note you will be reading to Czech children.
- Learning outcomes
- By the end of the course the student:
1. will have acquired the theory of shared reading and will have tested it in practice;
2. will be able to determine a suitable reading material for a concrete reader in concrete circumstances;
3. will have produces a plan and concept of their reading project;
4. will use their organization skills in setting up and conducting the project;
5. will have piloted and evaluated their project;
6. will assess the role and benefits of reading and shared reading. - Syllabus

- 1. The concept of shared reading and its benefits.
- 2. Book selection criteria.
- 3. Guide to planning the reading project.
- II. Field work:
