Course objectives
The aim of the course is to delve deeper into the phenomenon of linguistic landscape, which is currently a hot research topic in the field of sociolinguistics and multilingualism. The linguistic landscape imprints visible written languages (e.g. on shops, posters, billboards and many other signs) in public, especially urban, space. Linguistic landscapes not only provide a descriptive view of the presence of particular languages in a given space, but in light of an analytical approach, they are a repository of the social, cultural and political contexts and relations in a given space, as well as the discourses that take place within it. In recent years, this fascinating world of linguistic landscapes has begun to occupy an important place in the field of language education. Its potential for learning and teaching foreign languages forms one of the key aims of the subject.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: 1. summarize the characteristics of the linguistic landscape and the genesis of its research; 2. describe their meaning/role/functions in urban space from the sociolinguistic, (linguistic)political, social, cultural or cultural-historical point of view; 3. recognize their didactic potential for foreign language teaching; 4. apply the acquired knowledge to teaching practice.
