Course objectives
The objective of the course is to present the basic terms concerning general and special psychopathology to understand various associations and contexts, especially in terms of health promotion and prevention of mental diseases.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the students will:
  • Understand the basic concepts of general and special psychopathology,
  • Understand these principles in various contexts,
  • Be able to apply the knowledge in the area of promotion of mental health and prevention of mental diseases.
  • Syllabus
    • Content of psychopathology, basic concepts, significance of psychopathology for teachers;
    • Various concepts of normality of personality, attitudes to persons with intellectual disability (history, transformations over time, current situation);
    • Etiology of intellectual disabilities;
    • Disorders of mental functions (consciousness, perception, memory, attention, thinking, intellect, emotions, behaviour, will);
    • Neurotic disorders, stress-related disorders and somatoform disorders, trauma-based disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder;
    • Burnout syndrome in helping professions;
    • Behavioural disorders in childhood and adolescence, personality disorders;
    • Schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorders;
    • Affective disorders;
    • Organic mental disorders;
    • Eating disorders;
    • Prevention of mental disorders, promotion of mental health.

    Teaching methods
    Theoretical training. Teaching is delivered in the form of lectures and discussions with students. Continuous self-study of recommended materials. Students will prepare recommendations for working with pupils with various psychological disorders. They present and discuss these recommendations in subject seminars.
    Assessment methods
    The course is rounded off by a written exam, which consists of two parts (must be taken simultaneously). The first part focuses on general psychopathology. The second part of the test focuses on special psychopathology.
