- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to develop participants´ discussion skills, speaking fluency and ability to negotiate through immersive and intensive speaking sessions (simulation games and complex role-playing scenarios). The course is hands-on, you need to prepare (get in a mood) for every session (watch videos, read an article, get basic information about the scenario for the particular session), then try to solve the issue/game/scenario during the face-to-face session in cooperation with other classmates. The end of the session is dedicated to feedback and reflection with the tutor (very similar routine is applied for most of the sessions). The course is taught in English and focuses on developing English as a foreign language. Suggested level for participants to enrol is B1 and above.
- Learning outcomes
- Students will be able to: - discuss complex matters in English in the following fields: law & crime, management of a company, enterpreneurship, leadership, society (both contemporary and early modern) or ethics - negotiate and reach a compromise within a group of peers - propose solutions for particular problems and support them with suitable arguments - use turn-taking and floor holding devices efficiently in group discussions - identify strong points in their discussion skills in English and ways of using them actively in debates - identify weak points in their discussion skills in English e.g. fluency (breakdowns, hesitation), a narrow range of vocabulary, pronunciation errors and suggest (with the help of the tutor) a way of improving them

- 1. Introduction to role-playing, simulation games and discussion skills, working with individual goals and expectations, 2. CEO (managing a company in crisis) 3. People v. Johnson - jury duty (a crime case) 4. Grimfield (managing a plague stricken town in England during the years 1665 and 1666) 5. Family (leading a gang in 1920s and 1930s - the USA) 6. Tale of One Kingdom (building a utopian society) 7. A lesson on demand/make-up session + final reflection

- Teaching methods
- role-playing, group discussions, individual and group reflection, analyzing authentic and adapted materials
- Assessment methods
- Students should attend 80 % of the lessons. Credit is given to those who participate actively during the sessions. This also means that students are expected to prepare for individual sessions/games at home (reading given materials, watching videos, listening to podcasts, getting familiar with the rules).
