- Course objectives
- The course is designed as the introduction to children’s and young adult literature and its relationship with primary education.
The aim of the course is:
1) to explore characteristic genres of children’s and young adult literature such as poetry, fairy tales, picture books, adventure stories, fantasy, realistic fiction
2) to introduce some typical themes and conventions associated with children’s and young adult literature
3) to develop in students the ability to read children’s literature critically
4) to provide theoretical background for using literature in the classroom
5) to stimulate students to become passionate readers - Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, students will be able to read children’s literature critically, select books of various genres for equipping class library, and choose appropriate methods and activities for using children’s literature in the classroom.
- Syllabus
- 1. Three sources of children's literature.
- 2. A short survey of the development of children's literature; Golden Age of children's literature; milestones of children's literature.
- 3. Nursery rhymes.
- 4. Modern poetry for children.
- 5. Fairy tales traditional and modern, legends and tales.
- 6. Animal stories.
- 7. Children and families in children's fiction.
- 8. History and literature.
- 9. School stories.
- 10.Fantasy and alternative worlds.
- 11. From comics to picture books, graphic novels and manga.
- 12. Contemporary issues.
