- Course objectives
- The aim of this course is to obtain a clear knowledge of the subject optics at university level. Emphasis is placed on the logical construction of the science disciplines and to acquire knowledge and skills needed for teaching physics at the primary school (it is included lectures to a large number of simple experiments and emphasized the relationship discussed the substance of the practice, nature, home, etc.). Knowledge: Comprehensive overview of the subject of Optics with an emphasis on the relationship of the subject matter to practice, nature, household, technical applications, etc. Skills: To be able to identify the principles of natural processes and technical applications. Make sufficient approximation on the basis of basic physical laws and make subsequent calculations of simple application examples. To know simple experiments and the relation of the subject matter to practical applications. To be able to make a qualified estimate of values. Attitudes: Acquire the values of objectivity and importance of scientific work.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, the student should be able to/know: Basic Laws of Optics. Identify principles based on optics for natural processes and technical applications. Describe simple experiments and the relationship between the subject matter and the practical applications Perform calculations of simple application examples.
- Syllabus
- Syllabus of lectures (after weeks or blocks): 1. Basic ideas about light. The evolution of views on the nature of light, the dual nature of light. Speed of light. 2. Basic laws of propagation of light. 3. Light as electromagnetic wave, its properties. Maxwell's equations in optics and resolution. Power transferred by electromagnetic wave, Poyntig's vector.Polarization of electromagnetic waves. 4. Photometry. Basic photometric terms of quantity and units. 5. Interaction of light and matter. Fresnel's formula for the case isotropic non-absorbing medium. Optical properties of metals. 6. Light propagation by anisotropic medium, birefringence, optical activity, polarization. 7. Interference of light, conditions for noticeable interference. Coherent light sources - lasers. Young's attempt, finges of the same inclination and the same thickness, thin-layer interference. Many beams interference. The use of interference. 8. Diffraction of light - the basic principles. Fraunhoffer difraction. Diffraction on slit and grating. Fresnel diffraction. Resolution limit of optical instruments. 9. Holography and its use. 10. Geometrical optics. Essential elements of imaging systems, the characteristics of image, magnification. 11. Thin and thick lens, rendering equation. Optical defects and their correction. Simple optical instruments (magnifying glass, telescope, microscope). 12.
