- Course objectives
- Students will be able to explain the development of literary trends and movements in the particular period of Czech literature. They will be able to identify and analyse the style of outstanding literary personalities of the period. They will be able to interpret literary pieces as well as justify and support their views using their knowledge of literary studies. The aim of the subject is to outline the main changes in the development of Czech literature in the years 1890-1945 (with the inner differentiation in the following periods: 1890-1918, 1918-1938, 1938-1945). The emphasis is put on the problematic nature of literary genres and key personalities, as well as social context.

- 1. The period of the so-called Czech-modern (literature) 2. Anarchist- rebel period (first decade of the 20th century) 3. WW1 and the literary reaction 4. Literature from 1918 to the late 1920s (poetism, expressionism...) 5. Literature from the end of the 1920s to the formation of the protectorate (surrealism, christian poetry, Halas-Nezval generation, historical prose, catholic prose, imaginative prose, psychological prose, etc.) 6. - Teaching methods
- Students will be able to recognise and describe literary trends and movements of Czech poetry and prose, as well as the specific nature of their poetics. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities of Czech poetry and prose, significant for the particular period. Students will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in contact classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
- Assessment methods
- Credit requirements: oral examination which tests students´ knowledge of topics covered in the seminars. Active participation, attendance of min. 80%. Students will present results of their work in written form (seminar paper) and in the form of mini-lectures. They will develop their ability of critical thinking as well as their individual style. Student´s ability to evaluate a work, compare it in terms of contemporary Czech and world production will be emphasised, along with the ability to defend their views using specific terminology of the field.
