Course objectives
The lecture presents an overview over the phonological system of German and the standard phonetic realization of the different phonemes. Special attention is paid to areas where Czech and German phonetics depart an thus could be challenging for learners of German as a foreign language which Czech as their first language.
Learning outcomes
After completing the lecture, students should
- have a general idea of the pronounciation of contamporary standard German;
- be acquainted with the most important terminology used in phonetics and phonology;
- be able to estimate the phonological distance of Czech and German and to name examples of divergencies between the two languages with respect to phonetics and phonology;
- know methods how to become aware of the articulation of certain sounds and be able to use them for controlling their own pronounciation.

Teaching methods
Lectures; We divide the fundamentals of phonetics and phonology into 10 topics. For each topic we provide examples of a correct German pronunciation.
