Course objectives
The aim of the optional course "Authorial readings and discussions with contemporary Czech writers" is to create a format which would innovate and improve the quality in teaching contemporary Czech literature at the Faculty of Education, Masaryk university. The course corresponds to other courses students alredy attend: Czech literature after 1945 2, Latest Czech literature and literary studies or Forms of the latest Czech literature. The course aims at introducing outstanding personalities (writers) of the contemporary Czech literature and fiction during three evening sessions. It is our intention to meet the authors (three in a term) in a larger lecture hall and present them as representatives of dominant trends in the contemporary Czech literary production. The concept of a literary work as a communicative act (i.e. the act of communication between the author and the reader) is the basic requirement of the national curriculum (Framework Education Programme). The opportunity to meet and communicate with contemporary authors in person will increase students' motivation for the study of Czech contemporary literature and will sparkle their interest in the current literary production.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to deepen their relatioship towards Czech studies as well as their understanding of the creative process by being provided with a direct contact with contemporary literature. The newly acquired knowledge of the current trends in Czech literature will be used throughout their studies and their teaching practice. Based on their own reading students will get acquainted with the work of the authors featured in the particular semester.
Syllabus
  • All the seminars (sessions) have a unified structure. First the authors are briefly introduced, then they read from their own work and a group discussion follows. The literary sessions are preceded by students' preparation in the form of asynchronous tasks in an e-learning course in mood-link-a. Students prepare for the group discussion in which they address the main features of the author's poetics (motivation, background of their creative work, approach towards reality, and different ways artists use to portray the current world). The e-learning course also contains the reviews and voices of reception of the author at home and abroad. Part of the course is an individual discussion connected to a critical review of each session by every student.

Teaching methods
The method of a group discussion has the potential to help students extend not only their knowledge of a particular personality, but also point to the constant features of the whole literary process which the author is part of. Further, the method of individual and collective discussion as well as critical reflection of the authors' texts is employed.
Assessment methods
Students will submit an essay (about 2 pages) in which they will evaluate whether and how the sessions contributed to their learning. Students read at least one work by each writer. The tasks are submitted in the e-learning environment. In the moodle course, students will prove their knowledge of at least one literary work written by the authors in question.
