Course objectives
The course Basics of Pedagogy introduces the discipline Basics of Pedagogy and to present basic pedagogic terminology, methods, theories and structure of pedagogy as a scientific discipline. The course covers the relation between theory and practice, as well as selected social philosophy aspects of education. An outline of the course consists of analyses of contemporary education issues and process of educational transformation of Czech school system in context of post modern pedagogy.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the students will be able to: • explan basic terminology and their knowledge of the structure and functions of pedagogy as a scientific discipline, • discuss education phenomena, • apply the facts to a solution of specific education problems • evaluate current status of Czech school system.
Syllabus
  • 1. Place of pedagogy in the system of scientific disciplines. Basic terms, theory, classification, structure, division of pedagogical disciplines, auxiliary and boundary sciences, subject of research. 2. Problems of pedagogy as a science. The difference between modern and postmodern education. The concept and limits of pedagogy as a social science in comparison with the concept of natural sciences. 3. Theory of education (Y. Bertrand classification system). Experience reflective learning (Korthagen). Didactic Reconstruction (Shulman's Theory). R. Fisher's teaching strategy. Bruner's concept of knowledge structure. Didactic analysis of curriculum (Klafki). 4. Educational goal as a didactic category. Taxonomy of educational goals (Bloom, Kratwohl, Dave). Defining and verifying the educational goal. Errors in defining the educational goal. 5. Philosophical background and theoretical concepts of pedagogy. Concepts, values, concepts, leaders. 6. Curricular reforms (RVP ZV, creation of textbooks). Taxonomy of curricular areas (cognitive, affective, psychomotor, personality-social). Tyler's principle of curriculum construction. 7. Czech educational system. Characteristics of selected key problems of the Czech education system. Transformation of Czech school in the context of current trends (social inclusion, European dimension in education and multiculturalism, computer and financial literacy, globalization of knowledge, gender studies, tacit knowledge). School management (school management and development). 8. Characteristics of the origin of alternative pedagogy (representatives, directions, works, concepts, principles, conditions of education) and its definition to the so-called classical school. Current trends and topics in education (cooperative teaching, activity learning, school play, critical thinking, antipedagogy). 9. Social inclusion, conditions of education of pupils from socially disadvantaged environment. The individual and social importance of education, the right to education, equal access to education, social inequality in education, education and social justice.

Students will put in a four-page seminar work in the e-learning course "Basics of Pedagogy", distance e-course (password: seneca) one week before the beginning of the examination period. The student chooses the topic of the seminar work independently within the syllabus and materials available in the e-l system. When creating a seminar paper, it is necessary to start from the selection of one of the following possible forms of topic grabbing: - analysis of contribution of selected theory in the field of pedagogy, - optimization of the functioning of the Czech education system, solution proposal. - analysis of educational problem based on life experience and reading of professional literature.
