Course objectives
The course offers the survey of glottochronology and others lexicostatistical methods and their using.
Learning outcomes
Students acquaint a survey on quantitative methods in comparative linguistics.
Syllabus
  • 1.Mathematical methods in linguistics. 2.Sources of glottochronology. 3. Morris Swadesh and glottochronology. 4. Inovations done by Sheila Embleton. 5. Recalibrated glottochronology of Sergei Starostin. 6. Glottochronology in Czech. 7. Practical application of glottochronology. 8. Application of glottochronology on single language families and its evaluation.

Essay about lexicostatistics is requiered. Text analysis with own view is preferred. Attempt at preparing of one-hundred-word paper of chosen language or several languages is also possible.
