- Course objectives
- Outline of the Course - This course will look at developments in Irish drama from the late 19th century to the present. It will provide an overview of Irish cultural and social history, both in the Republic and Northern Ireland. We will read a number of plays in detail, focusing on such issues as nationalism and internationalism, rural drama, issues of representation, gender and many others. We will also consider the reasons for the increasing popularity of the recent Irish dramatic output.
- Syllabus
- The following topics will be discussed: Irish society and culture; Irish mythology; the country and the city; comedy and the grotesque; history, memory and nostalgia; magic, myth and reality; folk-tale and narration; women in Irish drama; Irish women dramatists; the Irish element in Czech theatre The work of the following dramatists will be discussed: W.B. Yeats, Lady Gregory, J. M. Synge, S. O'Casey, Brendan Behan, Tom Murphy, Brian Friel, Frank McGuinness, Anne Devlin, Christina Reid, Conor McPherson, Martin McDonagh, Marina Carr and others

- 1 hodina přednáška, 1 hodina seminář; kolokvium, 2kr +1 za zkoušku Požadavky kurzu: docházka (80 %) a esej (popř. ústní prezentace v semináři)
