Course objectives
The lecture is devoted to one of the most famous Czech play - R.U.R., Rossums Universal Robots (1921) by Karel Capek. We will go in for an interpretation of the drama (text), for an analysis of different stage productions of the play as well as for different perceptions of the play in diverse cultural contexts including influence of the play (especially Robot character) beyond theatre.

  • 1. Introduction 2. RUR factory utopia 3. RUR analyse of the text its structural qualities+characters 4. RUR between ancient tragedy and comedy of confusion 5. An inspiration with an adventurous epic - spectacularity pulp fiction. 6. Science fiction poetics and robot. 7. History of humanoid artificial beings and robots. 8. RUR / the myth of a Machine Age, robot both symbol and caricature of man in a machine age.
Assessment methods (in Czech)
Posluchaci v prubehu semestru pednesou referát na zvolené téma a ukoncí kurz odevzdáním písemné práce (rozvíjející téma referátu). Mohou si zvolit spíse historizující a nebo teoretický-analytický prístup. (Nap. srovnat drama RUR s jinou hrou zpracovávající obdobnou tématiku; rekonstruovat a/nebo interpretovat nekteré inscenace RUR)
