Course objectives

The seminar focuses on some cultural - especially literary - phenomena of the 20th century, which significantly influenced Bohumil Hrabal's work. Another part of the course is dedicated to specific features of the author's narrative strategy

• Bohumil Hrabal's biography; Inspiration by French literature (Surrealism - automatic method); Inspiration by Czech literature ("hospodský kec"); Inspiration by Czech avantgarde (Poetism, Group 42, Total realism); Inspiration by graphic arts (collage, assembly); Inspiration by environment ("pábení"); Inspiration by philosophy (Schopenhauer, Klíma, Lao-tzu); Official author? (Censorship and Samizdat); Variant, variation, version; Narration (metamorphosis of the narrator); Hrabal and Russian, Polish literature
