Course objectives

The aim of the course of Classical Philosophy I is to make students acquainted with the backgrounds of Greek philosophy and its evolution from the beginnings in Miletos till the teaching and writing of Plato.
At the end of this course, students will not only have information about the lives and works of illustrious philosophers of the period discussed, but will primarily understand evolution of philosophical thinking and provide the literal-critical analysis of the authors covered.

Syllabus

• 1. Beginnings of the Greek Philosophy, its relationship to the myth.
• 2.-8. Pre-Socratic philosophy: a) Milesian School (Thales, Anaximandros, Anaximenes); b) Pythagorean School; c) Xenophanes and his critic of myth; d) Heraclitus, the "philosopher of the Darkness"; e) Eleatic School (Parmenides and his scholars); f) Plualist School (Empedocles, Anaxagoras); g) Atomist School (Leucippus, Democritus).
• 9. Sophists and anthropological "revolution" in Greek philosophy.
• 10. Socrates. Socratic schools.
• 11. Plato: Life and work.
• 12. Genre characteristics of pre-socratic philosophical works.

Assessment methods

The course is taught as both lectures and seminars. Attendance and participation in the course (min. 75%). Semestral reading of covered philosophical texts. At the end of the course, final written exam in a form of a short essay on the topic assigned. The lecturer might insist also on oral examination apart from the written essay.
