- Course objectives
- The main objective of the course is to acquaint Slavonic Studies students with the essential cultural, social, historical and geographical facts concerning Lusatian Sorbs. In the seminar part of the course, emphasis will be put on linguistic comparison of Sorbian to the other West Slavonic languages.

A synchronic view of the Sorbian language within the context of West Slavonic languages; chiefly a comparison with Czech. 3. A historical overview of Sorbian national development (the issue of sovereignty of various states over Lusatia over centuries and the influence of this fact on the Sorbs; the following historical periods will be emphasised: humanism and renaissance, Sorbian national awakening, Sorbs under the German Empire, Weimar Republic, National Socialism and German Democratic Republic). 4. Czech-Lusatian relations (the Lusatian Seminary, Czech influence on the Sorbian national awakening, Serbowka, an overview of Czech Sorbian Studies: A. Černý, L. Kuba, J. and F. Páta, A. Frinta, J. Petr). 5. Overview of Sorbian literature (emphasis on modern Sorbian writing) 6. Overview of Sorbian culture (emphasis on music and painting; K. A. Kocor, B. Krawc, M. Nowak-Njechorński, C.
