Course objectives
This optional course which is offered for all students of German Philology focuses on the well-known and less-known German and Austrian authors in whose works the themes of death, doom, end, destruction, etc. appear. In the first 7-8 seminars the students will get acquainted with these authors and with their works and the rest of the seminars are dedicated to presentations on similar topics. At the end of this course, the students should be able to know the framework of the discussed works and they should be able to class the single authors to the literary context of these works. The students should understand why this topic has been so attractive in the course of the 20th century; they should be able to explain the essence of separate variations on this topic as well as to provide arguments based on concrete examples. Man objectives can be summarized as follows: the understand the basic forms of the German Literature, which describes various forms of the death, disappearance.
Syllabus
  • In the first 7-8 lessons should be the writers and the context of literature and philosophy brought to the attention. In the rest will be accounts presented. E. Canetti, S. Nadolny, P. Handke, P. Suskind, Ch. Ransmayr.

Lectures and seminars, discussion in the lesson. The student will get the credit if he/she gives an oral presentation of a selected topic.
