Course objectives
The connection between the foundation and activities of the Czechoslovak Legion during the First World War and its role in the foundation of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918.
The aim of these lectures is to acquaint students with the connections and significance of the foundation of an independent Czechoslovak Republic in 1918. To contribute to the students’ ability to independently analyse sources and literature from various areas linked to this issue and then use them to interpret specific questions regarding the First World War and the foundation of the Czechoslovak Republic.
Syllabus
  • The characteristics of the military-political blocs in Europe at the start of the Firs World War.
  • The reasons for the start of the First World War, the relationship between the leaders of Czech political life and the population regarding the war, the development of ideas surrounding the question of Czech and Slovak statehood before and during WWI.
  • The creation of conditions for the start of foreign Czechoslovak activities under the leadership of T.G. Masaryk, aided by compatriots in Russia, France, the USA and Italy in the formation of a foreign army.
  • The foundation and development of the Czechoslovak Legion in Russia, its position relating to the October Socialist Revolution, the Siberian Anabasis.
  • The foundation of the Czechoslovak Legion in France and Italy, its part in the struggle against Austria-Hungary, the role of the legion in the foundation of the Czechoslovak Republic.
  • The historical significance of the foundation of an independent Czechoslovak Republic, its formation at the end of 1918 and the beginning of 1919.
