Course objectives
After successfully finishing the class, the student will be able to: Define the basic terms related to the so-called Web 2.0 media and the social and cultural patterns emerging from these. Explain the relationships between new media technologies and changes in user culture and participation. Form opinions in regard to the social relationships defined in a network society. Sum up the knowledge from the branches of cultural studies oriented towards studying new media technologies. Discuss the opportunities and risks connected to their use.
Syllabus
  • The class focuses on cultural and social aspects of media which involve user participation. It will explain how collective intelligence (Levy) and produsage (Bruns) manifest on the Internet and how fan communities and creative collaboration work (Jenkins). It discusses the aesthetic implications of changes in both reception and production, including user generated content, fan fiction, modding, remixes and transmedia. It will also evaluate the network society's ability to contribute to political discussion (Sunstein, Benkler).

Teaching methods
Class will integrate lecture and workshop into single sessions. Discussions will be interspersed by screening of short videos related to the subject.
Assessment methods
Requirements are following: 1. attendance and reading. 2. a blog post about an interesting convergence-related phenomenon. 3. 10-15 pages long essay about a topic related to convergence (or a practical project plus a short explanatory essay)
